Robert Norris Application 2005
I'm Rob. Briefly, I've done the following:
I led the development of the jabberd2 server up until early 2004, when I passed the reigns over to the very capable pair of Justin Kirby and Stephen Marquard. Since then I've done next to nothing (at least publically) apart from the occassional mailing list post.
I've been trying to sell Jabber to my organisation, with mixed success. I run a small unofficial server, and have most of my division using it. MUC is proving to be a hit, and nearly all teams have their own room. There's also a division-wide room that we use to discuss services (interruptions, how things work, etc). Chatbot has been powered up to hook into our job tracking and alerts system, which is proving very useful and popular.
I'm also planning a new server project, called Topaz. Its still in its infancy, but several pages of notes and some test code have been written. Its not likely to be finished any time this century, but it is an interesting research project, and I hope to have some working code available soon.
So if you're currently thinking "this guy has done nothing at all recently," you'd be right. You can even go one further and correctly guess that its unlikely I'll do anything of note Jabber-wise in the upcoming year. I'd still like to retain my JSF membership - I've been around for a while and I still keep up with what's going on. Its something of a badge. I'll totally understand if you think this is a crap reason ;)
