My name is Tony Cheung and I'm applying to retain my JSF membership.

About Me

I am the Chief Developer for Chatopus, a Jabber/XMPP client on the Palm OS platform. I am a member of the JSF since 2004.

JID: asiayeah@jabber.org, e-mail: support@chatopus.com

Active Jabber/XMPP Projects

First version of Chatopus was released at the end of 2003. During the past 2 plus years, Chatopus has been improving continuously. The latest version is 1.93, released on Nov 2005. It is now one of the most popular IM clients on the Palm OS platform. It has introduced Jabber to many Palm users and has received regular reviews from the Palm user communities.

The patch (released on Nov 2005) adds unicode message handling functionalities to the Jabber ICQ transport (JIT). This enables Jabber users to send ICQ messages in their native languages. A few public transports are already running this patched JIT.

Evangelism

  • Being a loyal Palm OS user and a supporter of open standards, I am dedicated to develop the best mobile Palm OS IM client using the XMPP/Jabber protocol.
  • I like talking about XMPP/Jabber. In Oct 2005, I talked about Jabber and my Chatopus in a Hong Kong Cantonese internet radio station, talkonly.net. [1]
  • I started my first open-source Jabber contribution by releasing a unicode patch to JIT. If I have time, I will participate more in XMPP related open-source projects.

XMPP/Jabber - Why I like it

I developed SIP VoIP systems for several years. Comparing to SIP/SIMPLE, XMPP/Jabber is much simpler to understand and implement. With the new Jingle protocol, 2006 will be a great year for XMPP/Jabber.

Why I'm reapplying

I want to stay close with the latest XMPP/Jabber development.
