What are XEPs

XEPs (XMPP Extension Protocols) are documents that explain XMPP extensions/plugins; custom functionality on top of the core protocols.
Each client/server developer decides for himself which XEPs to use, but there is a “general” coordination/consensus to which the different actors actually refer. Common extensions are published in the XEP series, but such publication is not required and organizations can maintain their own private extensions if so desired.

The XMPP Standards Foundation (XSF) develops the XEP series through a lightweight standards process.
