Conferences/Summit 29
The XMPP Standards Foundation (XSF) will hold its 29th Summit on Friday 4 September and Saturday 5 September 2026. This will be the first online XMPP Summit in the organizers' memory.
To participate, please sign up below. This event is open to all community members and participation is free of cost.

Introduction
The XMPP Summit is where the XMPP community comes together to discuss protocol development, implementation experience, and the future of the ecosystem.
Traditionally, the Summit is an in-person event. This online edition is an experiment intended to:
- keep momentum between annual in-person Summits
- lower the barrier to participation
- provide space for focused technical discussions and follow-up on topics that benefit from real-time interaction
Unlike the regular Summit, this online event will use a more structured format. Because time is limited and online participation can be demanding, we want to define a clear agenda in advance.
This should help:
- make the event worthwhile for participants across time zones
- allow people to decide more easily if the topics are relevant to them
- make the event easier to promote in advance
If this sounds interesting to you, please join us.
Goals
As this is our first online Summit, we are intentionally keeping things lightweight.
The goal is not to replicate the in-person Summit experience, but to provide value that complements our existing asynchronous communication channels.
Possible goals include:
- follow-up on topics raised during Summit 28
- advance current XEP work
- discuss implementation pain points
- improve collaboration between projects
- make it easier for more community members to participate
Conduct and policies
We expect all participants to be familiar with our Community Code of Conduct.
Please be respectful of others' time, perspectives, and personal circumstances. Online participation can be demanding; we encourage everyone to help keep discussions constructive and focused.
Date & Schedule
- Friday 4 September and Saturday 5 September 2026
The time slots are the same on both days:
- Day 1: 13:00-16:00 UTC
- Day 2: 13:00-16:00 UTC
This schedule aims to balance time zones across Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific as well as possible.
Platform
This is an online-only event.
We intend to use an XMPP-friendly video conferencing solution (details to be confirmed).
Coordination during the event will happen in:
- Summit chat room summit@muc.xmpp.org (webclient)
A video link and any backup access details will be published here closer to the event.
Format
This online Summit will largely follow the traditional XMPP Summit unconference style, with one important change: the agenda will be prepared in advance rather than fully assembled on the day.
Pre-Summit agenda preparation
During the weeks leading up to the Summit, participants are expected to actively propose agenda items. Each proposal should include a short description of the topic and why it is worth discussing live.
All proposed topics will be collected and then voted on by participants, similar to the in-person Summit process.
This pre-bashing phase is intended to ensure that the live event is focused and productive, as previous experience has shown that purely in-session agenda creation does not work well in online settings.
Topic selection
After the voting phase, the top four topics will be selected for discussion.
These will be scheduled across the two days as follows:
- Day 1
- topics ranked 1 and 3
- Day 2
- topics ranked 2 and 4
Session structure
Each topic will have a maximum duration of 80 minutes.
Between sessions, we will include approximately 10 minutes of break time to allow for informal discussion and technical transitions.
Goals of this format
This structure is designed to:
- ensure high-quality, focused discussions
- reduce overhead during the live event
- encourage meaningful participation in advance of the Summit
- improve discoverability of topics for potential attendees
